The History of Beauty.

Beauty is an abstract notion, linked to many aspects of our human existence, but with this common point that it gives us a feeling of pleasure or satisfaction.

The diversity of realities that one could describe as beautiful is considerable, landscapes, nature, living being, art… which gives each of us emotions in our contact with them. Beauty is the object of a selfless and free satisfaction, it addresses the mind, it is useless (Beaudelaire ) but imposes itself without being able to prove it. Beauty is everywhere, globalization, tourism promotes the triumph of beauty, it is an aesthe--ticization of the world.

It is since the appearance and democratization of mirrors in the Renaissance (which corresponds to the recognition of the individual as such) and in 1835 by the invention of the silver mirror, that this individual search to please and be beautiful has appeared. It should be noted that the mirror was dethroned by photos and selfies.

Many philosophers have tried to define beauty: Socrates, Kant, Hume… the beauty of harmony and symmetry, the sensual beauty of beautiful hair or curves, the maternal beauty of the softness of a gaze, the ephemeral beauty of a flower… , but the psycho-logical approach is also interesting and can be seen from the angle of attractiveness. The attraction towards symmetrical faces rather than presenting a physical particu-larity or a deformity, would be due to a search towards an unmodified genetic patrimony (hence the sexual attraction...).

Some civilizations where bodies express themselves freely make bodies wear orna-ments or transform them according to rituals as in Africa, while in Japan beauty is ephemeral (cherry blossoms), and cultivates the cult of hidden beauty (kimono, Nô theatre), and that in China beauty is artificial (bandaged foot), while Indouism cultivates the beauty of the 3 inflections of the body and joints.

In the Occident, the cosmetics industry was probably born in Venice where women dye their hair in the sun on the terraces of the palaces.

The court of the sun king sees unfolding an artificial beauty of compressed bodies (to avoid any unintentional overflow) but sometimes so perilous that a new way of con- ceiving more natural and free beauty is born.

The appearance of electricity, the democratization of hygiene (disappearance of the tax on soap in 1833), microbiology (Pasteur in 1860), anaesthesia ( 1846) and especially since the Universal Exhibition of 1881, and the progress of chemistry and synthetic co- lors, have magnified make-up, medicine or cosmetic surgery, which have spread to the world and become a search to highlight his body.

The progress is dazzling: the first Beauty Institute in Paris in 1895, the first Maybelline mascara in 1915, the Rouge Baiser lipstick in 1927, or the Revlon nail polish in 1932.

Gradually beauty is thought of as a testimony of personality.

Marketing pushes everyone to take care of their body, the beautician has become a fairy godmother.

Medicine and cosmetic surgery since Suzanne Noel (repair of Broken Faces during the 2nd World War) have become less intrusive and try to respect the natural. Aesthetic acts have gone from 2 million procedures worldwide in 1997 to more than 20 million in 2018.

Since the 80s, with Punk fashion, young generations and even their parents, are look- king for a personal singularity with the multiplication of beauty products, tattoos, piercing, implants, etc. , these less and less marginal body marks have become an accessory of beauty (as in ancestral Africa), an affirmation of one’s identity (being unique), a staging of oneself. The skin has become the parchment of his life to fix the memory on his body, in a triple search: of image returned, of attractiveness on the other, of self-esteem
